Pele (2011 - 12)

for piccolo and piano

Duration: ca. 13'

TBC Composer Recital Series ::: December 2012 ::: Boston, MA

The Hawaiian goddess of volcanoes, Pele draws on key features of fire that represent strength and mysticism. Ember opens with a brooding atmosphere of the piccolo’s lower register, increasingly gaining power through the repetition of its melodic fragments. Building to an absolute frenzy, a brief moment of uncomfortable calms precedes Eruption, a brutal dance juxtaposing playful chaos and bombastic rage. After an explosive climax, Exaltation attempts to rebuild presence from the ashes of the melody, but continually fades away. Ever persistent, the flame of Pele’s ferocity slowly rebuilds and regains its original triumphant robustness.
